LEGION BASEBALL: No-hitter helps Lums earn split on opening day of wood bat tourney

| July 3, 2021 1:05 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Liam Paddack and Jackson Scherr teamed for a no-hitter as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen beat the Kennewick Outlaws 2-1 on Friday night in the Lums’ second game on the opening day of the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic at Thorco Field.

The Lums walked six and hit one but hey, a no-hitter is a no-hitter.

“I didn’t even notice (the no-hitter),” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “Just staying in the moment. Somebody said it at the end.”

Friday morning, the Lums were held to two hits in a 5-1 loss to the Eastside Baseball Club Renegades.

On Friday night, Paddack struck out 10 and walked six, and one of his walks scored on a wild pitch in the third inning to tie the game at 1.

Scherr fanned two in the seventh.

“This was the template we envisioned early in the season; Jackson would be the closer and our two big lefties (Paddack and Troy Shepard) would get us deep into games,” Taylor said.

Kyle Bridge hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning for Coeur d’Alene (17-7), and his RBI single in the fourth put the Lums ahead to stay.

Cooper Larson scored both runs for Coeur d’Alene.

In the first game, Sebastian Munoz struck out seven and allowed one hit over six innings for Eastside vs. Coeur d’Alene.

Troy Shepard struck out seven in 6.1 innings for the Lums, allowing five hits and five runs, three earned.

The Lums are scheduled to play the Spokane Expos 2023 today at 11:30 a.m. at Thorco to conclude pod play. Then, later today and depending on how they finish in their pod, they’ll either play a quarterfinal game as part of a single-elimination championship bracket, or play a crossover game to conclude their tourney stay.

The Lums need to finish in the top two of their four-team pod to advance to a quarterfinal game.

After the first day, Eastside is 2-0, the Lums and Outlaws are 1-1 and the Expos are 0-2.
