$500,000 bail for man charged with attempted murder

ATHOL — A man is being held on $500,000 bail after police said he tried to shoot his former partner.

Gregory K. Stocking, 62, of Dalton Gardens is charged with attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault, both felonies.

He is also charged with domestic battery, a misdemeanor.

A woman who identified herself as Stocking’s ex contacted the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office Thursday afternoon to report that he shot at her near Ramsey Road and Highway 54.

Earlier that day, Stocking reportedly wanted to retrieve personal items from the woman’s residence. The pair argued, police said, and Stocking left.

He allegedly returned about 45 minutes later and used a key to enter the residence. Another argument ensued, the woman said.

Stocking allegedly pulled a handgun, pointed it in the woman’s face and pushed her to the ground.

She escaped, ran to the gate of her driveway and flagged down a passing vehicle for help, deputies reported.

As the woman was climbing into the passerby’s vehicle, Stocking allegedly fired multiple rounds in her direction before fleeing the scene in a red truck.

No one was hit by the gunfire, police said.

Officers from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Spirit Lake Police Department and Idaho State Police reportedly canvassed the area, searching for Stocking.

Law enforcement received a report of a vehicle matching the truck’s description was stuck off Sheep Springs Road, north of Highway 54.

Police found Stocking in the area and arrested him.

Stocking has previously been arrested on domestic violence charges, according to KSCO.

He pleaded guilty in 2020 to violating a no contact order, a misdemeanor.

Coeur d’Alene Magistrate James Combo ordered Friday that Stocking be held on $500,000 bail.

He also issued a no contact order between Stocking and the woman.
