PREP WRESTLING: Vikings notch another TerHark title
COEUR d'ALENE — Chances are, Alyssa Randles won't be the last girl to make an impact in the TerHark Cup wrestling dual between Coeur d'Alene and Lake City High.
She just happens to be the first.
Randles, a sophomore at Coeur d'Alene High, pinned Lake City sophomore Blaine Leonard in 3:18 at 120 pounds. Randles is believed to be the first — and only girl — to compete in the dual.
"My mindset is always to do my best and have fun," Randles said. "I just tried to keep it that way the entire match, regardless of the score."
Randles trailed 2-0 after the first period, but caught Leonard on his back to gain the pin, one of seven Viking pins on the night.
"That Blaine Leonard is one of the toughest kids in the state," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. "And she did a good job. She hit that fireman's and luckily, she didn't let him off his back. That's a big accomplishment for her to do that."
Randles won the girls Rollie Lane Invitational earlier this month in Nampa.
"She just loves wrestling," Moffat said. "You talk about gym rats in basketball, but she's one in wrestling. She just soaks it up. She loves to practices and loves to compete. You'll see her wrestling for a women's college program down the road. She's doing a good job."
Coeur d'Alene won the dual 63-15, the program's 19th straight in the rivalry dual, in its 26th year.
"We're just more experienced than they are at some of those weights in the middle," Moffat said. "Corey does a good job. They're well coached, and compete hard. But we've got some more experience in those middle weights."
"From 132 up, they're solid," Lake City coach Corey Owen said. "They present challenges at each weight. And they wrestled great tonight. I thought we had a chance to get wins at 113 and 120, and we just got outwrestled. We just need to make some changes before districts."
Senior Jackson Kohal scored a 1-0 win over Lake City senior Logan Parson in a match that came down to the wire.
"It was a typical heavyweight match," Moffat said. "I'd like to see Jackson get a takedown there and go up by three and put it away. If you let a guy hang around, and he gets a takedown late, we may lose that match. But they're both really good heavyweights."
"Jackson's a great wrestler and was third in the state last year," Owen said. "For Logan to be in on the winning shot at the end, it shows us we're not that far away. We've got work to do, but he's right there. It's positive for Logan going forward."
Kohal took a 1-0 lead after the first period, then held off a late charge by Parson.
"Logan's a big boy, and they carry a lot of weight with those guys," Kohal said. "You've got to stay balanced when you're wrestling him. You've got to get into the mindset that you've got to find a way to win matches. Sometimes, you've got to take the fight to them instead of them taking the fight to you."
Lake City senior Matthew Whitcomb pinned Bear Brunner in 5:48, one of two pins for the Timberwolves.
"He's a stud," Owen said. "From the moment the whistle blows, he's there to take care of business. And he does. Physically, he's a hammer right now and he imposes his will on anyone he wrestles."
