COEUR d’ALENE — Once the Vikings overcame the emotion and energy of Senior Night, they were able to overcome something else that hadn’t been done since 2014.

Clinching an outright Inland Empire League title.

Skylar Burke scored 13 points for the Vikings in a 41-29 win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs at Viking Court on Thursday night.

“We have an amazing group of seniors and our program is blessed to have had these girls a part of it,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons, who started seniors Nakisha Matheson, Jaelyn Brainard-Adams, Tori Younker, Jaden Chavez and Emma Whiteman. “But as always, the girls worked hard and settled in and did was we needed to do to win in the fourth quarter.

“We missed that goal of winning the league last year, and it was the first of three goals the team set this year. Now, we can focus on winning districts.”

Younker scored 12 points for Coeur d’Alene (15-1, 11-0 IEL), which hosts Moscow on Feb. 2.

Hattie Larson scored 12 points for Sandpoint (6-7, 3-5).

“Sandpoint played hard and never backed down,” Symons said.

SANDPOINT — The energy inside Les Rogers Court made it feel like a rivalry game, and the action on the court didn't disappoint.

For over three quarters, Sandpoint basketball traded blows with Coeur d'Alene, but in the end the Vikings defense allowed them to pull away in the fourth to secure an Inland Empire League victory.

“We didn’t execute very well in the first half,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams, whose team led 29-23 at halftime. “If you let a team stay in it on the road, they’re going to gain some confidence. We really wanted to come out and jump on them, but weren’t able to do what we needed to. We kind of righted that at halftime.”

Cameren Cope had 23 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots for Coeur d’Alene (4-5, 3-2 IEL).

"He's just a big kid so he can go down there and bang," Sandpoint interim coach Mike Roos said, "and this was kind of one of his games because you can bang into him as much as you want, you're not going to move him much. It's nice and it frees up some of our other guys to move into different spots."

Steven Burgess had 12 points for Coeur d’Alene, which hosts Lewiston on Tuesday.

“Steven did a good job of managing the game,” Adams said. “He had some good active hands on defense and knocked down some shots late in the game.”

Darren Bailey had 14 points for Sandpoint (4-7, 0-5), which hosts Lewiston on Saturday.

“After a week of finals and a long road trip, I was proud how e got off to a good start in the first quarter,” said St. Maries coach Bryan Chase, whose squad led 21-6 after one quarter. “We were running well, and playing good defense.”

Tristan Gentry had 17 points, six rebounds and three assists for St. Maries (11-0), ranked second in 2A in this week’s state media poll. Eli Gibson had six points and three steals.

PLUMMER — For the first three quarters, it was looking like Lucky’s night.

Then, foul trouble hit.

Lucky Matt, a 6-foot-5 freshman, scored 21 of his 23 points in the first three quarters, including 15 in the first half, before fouling out early in the fourth for the Knights JV, who fell to the Tigers at Ron Miller Court.

“Mullan switched to a zone and that collapsed our inside game,” Lakeside JV coach Jess Arthur said. “That led to a lot of offensive fouls on Lucky.”

Luke Trogden had 29 points and six steals, and Riley Trogden had 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for Mullan (4-3), which is scheduled to host Wallace on Tuesday.

“I thought we played a lot better in the second half,” Mullan coach Paul Elston said. “We played much better defense, probably our best to date this season.”

Lakeside JV returns to action at Kellogg on Monday.
