PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lakeland gets defensive, whips Sandpoint

| January 16, 2021 1:20 AM

RATHDRUM — With a week in between games, Lakeland wanted to change its identity from a offensive-minded squad to one that can stop the ball a little more often.

On Friday, it worked like a charm.

Carson Seay scored 19 points and Ammon Munyer had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakeland Hawks in a 72-49 win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs at Hawk Court.

“We were trying to form an identity of what wins basketball games,” said Lakeland assistant coach Tyrel Derrick, whose team had a nonleague game at Bonners Ferry canceled earlier this week due to COVID-19. “We’ve been trying to shift the focus to the defensive side of things, which is going to be big for us in the second half of the season.”

Lakeland opened the game on an 18-0 run and led 42-14 at halftime.

“Our guys came out with some good intensity and we had a good week of practice,” Derrick said. “Sandpoint, they played really hard in the second half, and didn’t stop competing.”

Jalen Skalskiy scored 15 points for Lakeland (6-3, 2-2 IEL), which plays at Post Falls on Tuesday.

Collin Roos scored 17 points for Sandpoint (3-6, 0-4), which plays at Priest River on Tuesday.

PLUMMER — When the Knights can play with pressure, they can find scoring from a lot of different players.

Friday was just J.J. Hall’s night.

Hall scored 10 of his 17 points in the first half for the Knights in a win over the Jaguars in the Scenic Idaho Conference opener for both at Ron Miller Court.

“J.J. did a good job of scoring off the press,” said Lakeside coach James Twoteeth, whose teams led 25-3 after the first quarter. “We were able to turn them over quite a bit in the first quarter.”

Kenyon Spotted Horse scored 15 points and Vander Brown 12 points for Lakeside (9-1), which hosts Wallace in another league game on Tuesday.

Nathan Weeks scored 14 points for Genesis Prep (1-5), which faces the Post Falls freshmen today at The Courts at Real Life in Post Falls.
