PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lakeland runs past Lewiston

| January 6, 2021 1:14 AM

RATHDRUM — Sometimes, all it takes is a good run to get the offense going.

Jalen Skalskiy and Noah Haaland scored seven points each in the fourth quarter for Lakeland, which outscored the visiting Lewiston Bengals 24-4 in the final eight minutes of a 61-46 win in Inland Empire League play at Hawk Court on Tuesday.

“It was a great group effort,” Lakeland assistant coach Tyrel Derrick said. “We did some good things in the second half. We were able to get some defensive rebounds and get out and run the court.”

Skalskiy had 19 points and eight rebounds, Haaland 14 points and Carson Seay 16 points for Lakeland (4-3, 1-3 IEL), which hosts Timberlake on Friday.

“With Jalen, Noah and Brice (Henry), they’re talented in the open court,” Derrick said. “When were able to get out and run, it’s a good thing for us.”

Braydon Forsman scored 11 points for Lewiston (5-2, 1-1), which hosts Post Falls on Friday.

PLUMMER — When the man-to-man didn’t work out as well as Lakeside coach James Twoteeth had to switch things up.

And the Knights got into a zone, both offensively and defensively.

Day Day Higgins had 14 points and 10 rebounds, leading four players in double figures in a 64-37 win over the Wildcats at Ron Miller Court.

“We started off in man and got into some foul trouble,” Twoteeth said. “When we switched to a zone, it was kind of a turning point in the game. In the first quarter, you could tell we’d been off for a few weeks, but we started to settle down and hit some shots. Our bench guys are starting to come along. Everyone played and contributed tonight, which was good to see.”

Vander Brown, Jasper Abuan and JJ Hall had 10 points each for Lakeside (5-1), which hadn’t played since Dec. 16. The Knights travel to Clark Fork on Thursday.

Logan Jerome scored 15 points for Kellogg (2-2), which hadn’t played since Dec. 5 due to COVID protocols. The Wildcats are scheduled to host St. Maries on Saturday.
