Perhaps in 2021 it is time to reset our thinking around what it means to be truly healthy. Being healthy is more then the foods you eat, the number of steps you take or how many hours you spend in the gym. Being healthy is a mindset, a way of life that is honored every day.

Maybe it is time to think beyond 10,000 steps per day and consider it's not all about working harder at the gym. Perhaps it's time to wake up every day with a more holistic approach that brings all of the following together.

• Nutrition, remove or drastically reduce processed sugar daily, strive to reach 40 percent of your daily food intake with raw uncooked fresh vegetables and fruits. Reduce your daily intake of grains and replace them with healthy alternatives.

• Sleep is one of the most underrated yet highly effective ways to stay healthy. Strive to get 7 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. Use micro-naps or napping at various times in the day to make up for poor nightly sleep habits. Whatever you do, be consistent all year long with good sleep habits.

• Movement, the human body is designed to move, lift, stretch, walk, climb, and so forth. Make your daily movements diverse and do more than walk or lift weights. Create a series of activities that address all areas of your body. Consider alternatives whole-body workouts such as Yoga, Pilates, or dance.

• Mindfulness, remove toxic thoughts, toxic people, and spend time each day clearing your mind of stress and worry. Learn to meditate, relaxing curb overactive thoughts, and practice purging your negative feelings daily.

As we enter 2021, it is time to honor our health and wellbeing daily, consistently across more areas than just physical exercise. 2020 has seen significant shifts in how people view many fundamental aspects of nutrition, self-care, and fitness.

There is undoubtedly a groundswell of change affecting how many of us consider the connection between our health, fitness and spiritual wellbeing.

It's time for people to consider changing their view on what it really means to be healthy, and that goes beyond diet and exercise fads. People from all walks of life have recently been faced with the vulnerability an unhealthy lifestyle brings. One driving factor in 2020 was the glaring realization many were faced with around the critical need to start making better choices in sustainable sleep, nutritious foods, and making strides toward an active, healthier life.

Poor nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle play a significant role in surviving any major health crisis you may encounter. The whole world has undoubtedly begun shifting what to consider are the best building blocks for maintaining a consistently healthy lifestyle.

With significant changes in how we understand exercise physiology, the positive health impact of outdoor activities, nutritional factors around managing macro-nutrients, and new research tied to the importance of sleep building, a best practice has never been easier.

Anyone coming into 2021 with a New Years' resolution or a bucket list of items to improve their quality of life must consider placing an improved health and wellness program at the top of their list. Exercise, eating healthy, getting plenty of sleep, and being active can be unstructured, playful, and free-ranging. It only requires a commitment to be consistent on a daily basis.

It is best to apply and ease into healthy lifestyle changes in such a way that seems simple, more natural, and less daunting. Formal fitness programs are tremendous but completely unnecessary as long as you keep moving to maintain muscle and tone.

Eating healthy with delicious healthy foods has never been easier. Being mindful can be as simple as ten minutes of quiet time here and there throughout the day. Getting enough sleep can also include short naps during the day.

In these uncertain and challenging times, it should be fairly obvious the need to prioritize your motivation to live a healthier lifestyle. Perhaps 2021 will be your year to find and cultivate a unique, all-encompassing shift to a consistent daily series of lifestyle changes, ensuring many years of great health and happiness.
