Woman tried to flee crash, police say

COEUR d’ALENE — A woman is being held on $250,000 bail after police said she attempted to flee a crash that injured her children.

Brec I. Kennedy, 32, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, eluding, robbery, burglary and two counts of injury to a child, all felonies.

She is also charged with reckless driving and obstructing an officer, both misdemeanors.

Police responded Saturday to multiple reports of a driver, later identified as Kennedy, allegedly running red lights and speeding in Coeur d’Alene. Her two children, a baby and a 5-year-old, were in the car.

When police attempted to stop Kennedy at a gas station, she reportedly drove off.

Police said Kennedy hit another car at the intersection of Fourth Street and Best Avenue.

Witnesses said Kennedy got out of her car with her baby in her arms and let her 5-year-old child out of the back seat.

She then reportedly jumped in the driver’s seat of another car, whose driver had gotten out to assist the people in the crash.

The passenger in the other car told police Kennedy threw the baby to her when she climbed into the driver’s seat. The two allegedly struggled over the gear shift.

Kennedy drove about 100 feet before the passenger pulled the hand brake, according to court documents.

Police arrested Kennedy at the scene.

Both children were transported to Kootenai Health due to injuries sustained in the crash, police said.

Judge Anna Eckhart ordered Tuesday that Kennedy be held on $250,000 bail.
