Prep Wrestling: Lakeland wins its 13th straight regional title

RATHDRUM — Seniors Riley Siegford (145 pounds) and Sam Feusier (285) each won their third regional titles, and the Lakeland Hawks won their 13th straight 4A Region 1 wrestling championship on Friday at Lakeland High.

Lakeland had 10 regional champions — this year, only the regional champ earns an automatic berth to state from this region. Wild-card berths to state will be determined at the seeding meeting Sunday.

“It’s frustrating, but it’s out of our control,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “But at least we have a chance at some wild cards.”

Lakeland senior Soren Sabatke pinned the Hawks’ No. 1 man at 152, his senior teammate Blaise Wright in the championship match.

“Last year, Soren was in a wrestle-back for second and third (at regionals), and was up something like 13-2 and got pinned,” Edelblute said. “This year he wasn’t going to leave it to chance.”

State is a one-day tourney for each classification this year, with the 4As competing next Friday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
