Woman dies after falling through ice

| February 16, 2021 6:06 PM

A 77-year-old woman died after falling through the ice on Lake Coeur d'Alene Tuesday afternoon near Harrison.

The woman was identified as Leslie G. Daniels from the Harrison area.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office received a report that someone had gone onto the ice to possibly rescue a dog or other animal, and fell through it about 3:15 p.m. in the area of Harlow Point, according to a KCSO press release.

Citizens used ropes and a canoe to try and save Daniels, but were unsuccessful.

The KCSO dive rescue team pulled the unconscious woman from the water.

Lifesaving efforts were immediately started, however they were unsuccessful, the release said.

It was the second death related to a person breaking through ice in the past three weeks.

On Jan. 29, Dale G. Renfro, 60, Spokane Valley, died in Blue Lake. It was reported by family that Renfro was an avid fisherman and was more than likely attempting to ice fish when he fell through the ice, a press release said.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone that with the current snow and fluctuating temperatures, the ice on local lakes may become thin.

"We would also like to warn citizens from going out on the ice to rescue animals," the release said. "If an animal falls through the ice, the chances are a person would also fall through the ice."

If an animal falls through the ice or is trapped on the ice, contact the KCSO.
