COEUR d’ALENE – Kootenai County’s Planning and Zoning Commission has released a guide to development and activities in the county’s Shoreline Management Areas.

The informational guide was developed to fulfill goals and policies from the county’s 2020 Comprehensive Plan Update aiming to protect and enhance the county’s natural resources. Shoreline Management Areas include areas adjacent to the county’s rivers, lakes and streams.

“The county’s goal is to promote the continued health of our lakes and rivers while respecting the rights of property owners,” said David Levine, chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The citizens’ guide to Shoreline Management Areas is one of eight projects the Planning and Zoning Commission is working on to implement policies developed as part of the county’s 2020 Comprehensive Plan Update.

“It is important to us that Kootenai County citizens are aware of the policies — developed with their input — that are being implemented,” Levine said.

The Planning and Zoning Commission previously released a guide to conservation easements, which can help preserve open space and the county’s natural resources while providing tax benefits for donors. Both guides are available for viewing at www.KeepingKootenai.com.
