OROFINO - St. Maries senior Macie Rimel hit the go-ahead 3-point basket in the game's final minutes, and the visiting Lumberjacks held off the Maniacs 53-51 to win their 2A District opener on Tuesday.

With the victory, St. Maries (8-10) travels to Grangeville tonight for the district championship. The Lumberjacks must beat the top-seeded Bulldogs twice to advance to the 2A state tournament.

"Macie knocked down a big 3-pointer to give us the lead with about one-and-a-half minutes left," St. Maries assistant coach Dakota Wickard said. "We made a stop, hit 3-out-of-4 free throws down the stretch and held on."

Wickard said Lacey Sines scored all eight of her points in the second quarter to put St. Maries ahead, and the Lumberjacks kept the lead until midway through the final period. The Maniacs opened up a 49-47 advantage with a couple minutes remaining, before Rimel's shot rallied the Lumberjacks.

Rimel led St. Maries with 11 points; Mackenzie Hammond added 7 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals, and Jenna Holder added 9 points and 4 assists.

Sydnie Zywina led Orofino with 22 points, and Kaylynn Johnson scored 14 for the Maniacs (8-8).

MULLAN — Led by senior guard Cameron Garcia and junior guard Sam Barnett, the Wampus Cats opened a 19-point lead after one quarter and cruised past the host Tigers for a convincing North Star League victory.

"Garcia led the way for his team," Mullan coach Paul Elston said. "Clark Fork came out and played with a lot of energy tonight. We were very, very flat and did not have a response for their energy."

Barnett led all scorers with 24 points, while Garcia added 21 for the Wampus Cats (3-11, 1-1 NSL), who split their league games with Mullan. The site of their postseason matchup remains undetermined, Elston said.
