CHARITY: Local is better
You cannot imagine my shock seeing a full page on Goodwill Industries featured on the front of the CoeurVoice last Saturday. They are very close to the top of the list where zero monies go to help anyone except the CEO/Owner, Mark Curran.
They do employ, for lack of a better word, the “unemployable,” parolees, homeless, etc., and pay them minimum wage. According to Snopes.com, first published in 2005 and updated in 2017, the five worst charities are the American Red Cross, March of Dimes (a dime for every dollar given to the needy), United Way, Unicef (5 cents of each donated dollar goes to the cause) and, last but not least, Goodwill (zero goes to anyone).
I’m talking to your readers now: Check it out on the internet as there are several excellent national charities. Some of these that give 100% of donated dollars (not some high paid CEO or owner) includes The Salvation Army, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lions Club, Ronald McDonald Houses, St. Jude and Make a Wish.
But please consider giving your donations to the local charities where the monies stay right here in our neighborhood. But be sure to find out how much of the donations go to the cause, not some high paid CEO or owner.
