PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Viks notch another defensive gem

| December 31, 2021 1:20 AM

MERIDIAN — Concluding a three-day run in the Boise area, Coeur d’Alene had the goal of making host Meridian a little uneasy on its home floor.

“They’re a very good shooting team,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams, whose team beat the Warriors 40-29 on Thursday afternoon. “They run five guys out there that can really shoot the ball and knock it down. We wanted to make them uncomfortable and set the tone defensively, and they didn’t respond well to it.”

Coeur d’Alene held Meridian to three points in the first quarter, 11 in the first half in building a 23-11 halftime lead.

“This was a big win for us,” Adams said. “It’s two games now where we’ve really put together four quarters of really good basketball. I think the guys are getting and gaining confidence in who we are and think we can defend anybody.”

Cameren Cope scored 12 points, Cooper Larson eight points for Coeur d’Alene (7-2), which hosts Lake City in the Fight for the Fish spirit game on Jan. 7.

Ethan Pearce scored nine points for Meridian (3-4), the defending state 5A champions.

Blake Buchanan had 13 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots, Nathan Hocking 13 points and Kolton Mitchell four assists for Lake City (10-0).

“We were not mentally ready to play today,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “It was a poor effort on our part. We kind of sleep walked through the first 3 ½ quarters, and then showed some life in the final four minutes. When that happens, it’s my fault and I can’t let that happen as we continue on.”

Lake City travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

Blake Hawthorne scored 14 points for Bishop Kelly (6-2).

EAGLE — Neil McCarthy scored 11 points for the Trojans in a loss to the Mustangs at Eagle High.

“Each time we face a team, it’s a new look and defense that our kids are seeing for the first time,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “We were handling their pressure really well in the first half. In the second half, they made some plays and we just struggled with the changes. I’m pretty happy with where we’re at. We’re playing a lot better than we did two weeks ago when we were down here. But we’ve still got a long way to go.”
