DYSLEXIA: Two inspiring girls

| December 31, 2021 1:00 AM

I am writing to commend the two young girls, Bridget and Lillian McNamee, who are helping kids with dyslexia learn to read by providing books printed in a special font to local libraries.

I am an 84-year-old man who has lived with crippling dyslexia my entire life. I believed what my teachers told me back in the 1940s — that I was just plain stupid. I have such painful memories of being asked to stand in front of my class and read something I couldn’t even see on the page while my teacher yelled and my classmates laughed at me.

Like many dyslexics, however, I was able to provide for my family and make a decent living working with my hands. I joined the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic during the Cold War, then became a precision machinist for Hewlett-Packard because I could read blueprints and understood mechanical things.

I was so encouraged to read The Press article about what these delightful young ladies are doing that I had to let them know what a huge blessing their work will be to many people in our community. You GO, girls, and may God richly bless you!
