PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Vikings defend, down Bishop Kelly

| December 30, 2021 1:25 AM

BOISE — Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams has been waiting all season for a night like Wednesday.

Four complete quarters and a big road win.

Steven Burgess scored 16 points for the Vikings, who held Bishop Kelly to 25 points in the final three quarters for a 61-40 win at Bishop Kelly High.

“We’ve been getting glimpses of what we could be in quarters,” Adams said. “They ran zone the entire game. We’ve got some shooters and moved the ball really well and were patient on offense. It was the first game we’ve put four complete quarters together and played really good basketball.”

Cameren Cope had 11 points for Coeur d’Alene (6-2), which plays at Meridian today at noon PST.

Blake Hawthorne, a University of Chicago commit, scored 14 points for Bishop Kelly (6-2), which hosts Coeur d’Alene today.

“He’s a big time player and we knew they worked through him,” Adams said. “Cameren and Alex (Nipp) did a good job with him. We held Bishop Kelly to zero field goals in the second quarter and have really been trying to get that in your face defense and strong post defense going. Tonight, the kids played really well.”
