PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lake City downs Meridian in 5A title game rematch

| December 29, 2021 1:25 AM

MERIDIAN — Meridian, the defending state 5A champion came out with something to prove in Tuesday’s nonleague game with visiting Lake City.

Well, so did the Timberwolves.

Junior point guard Kolton Mitchell scored 34 points, including 7 of his team’s 12 points in the second overtime as the Timberwolves beat the Warriors 77-71 at Meridian High.

“Meridian came out loaded for bear and on fire,” said Lake City coach Jim Winger, whose team trailed 23-16 after the first quarter. “They made five 3-pointers in the first quarter and jumped out on us. We did a great job with our defensive adjustments and maintained some sanity. They were totally on fire, but our kids never blinked an eye and that’s the way they’ve been all year long.”

Blake Buchanan had 14 points and eight rebounds, Nathan Hocking 15 points and Zach Johnson nine points and nine rebounds for Lake City (8-0), which plays at Eagle tonight.

“We’ve been taking teams' best shot all year, and that’s great for us,” Winger said. “I was really impressed with our composure and how we handled things. It was a real quality win for us. To ride a bus for seven hours, check into the hotel and grab our uniforms, get back on the bus and go play, it was great to see.”

Lake City finished 17 of 20 from the free throw line.

EAGLE — Cameren Cope scored 14 points for the Vikings, who were outscored 42-24 in the second half of a loss to the Mustangs at Eagle High.

“We played really well in the first half, matched their physicality and took them out of what they wanted to do,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams, whose team led 27-24 at halftime. “Eagle tries to tire you out and we broke their press and were able to get some buckets out of it. In the second half, we just had a lot of turnovers and missed free throws, and they tired us out.”

Landon White scored 24 of his 33 points in the second half for Eagle (6-1), which hosts Lake City tonight.

Logan Orchard scored 13 points for Coeur d’Alene (5-2), which plays at Bishop Kelly tonight.

BOISE — Neil McCarthy scored 12 points for the Trojans, who turned the ball over 21 times in a loss to the Knights of Boise.

“Bishop Kelly runs an 2-3 extended passing lane zone and we really struggled with that tonight,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “Bishop Kelly scored 22 points just off jumping into the passing lane. Our guys got a little tentative and it played right into their strengths and they beat us up on the boards. The game is a little more physical down here, and we struggled with that tonight.”

Post Falls (3-5) plays at Meridian tonight at 6.

Blake Hawthorne scored 17 points for Bishop Kelly (6-1), which hosts Coeur d’Alene tonight.

SPOKANE VALLEY — In the first half, the Hawks played just like first-year coach Tony Hanna expects them to.

Abe Munyer had 10 points and 12 rebounds, Scotty Hocking scored 14 points and Lakeland beat the Rams of Chatteroy, Wash., in the Eagle Holiday Classic at West Valley High.

“I think that was the best half of basketball we’ve played all season,” said Hanna, whose team led 32-13 at halftime. “We like to get out and go, but need to get stops on defense to do that. We did a good job of getting some stops in the first half.”

Grant Roth scored 11 points for Lakeland (3-5), which faces Toppenish today at 5 p.m.

Jordan Nortz scored 16 points for Riverside (1-6).

“I told our guys that he was going to hit a few shots,” Hanna said of Nortz, who played at Priest River last year. “We saw some flashes of what we can be. We had a great first half. They had it down to seven in the fourth, but we weathered the storm, which was good to see.”

LEWISTON — Kolby Luna scored 17 points for Kellogg in a loss to Lapwai in the opening round of the Avista Winter Classic at Lewis-Clark State College.

“That’s a good basketball team,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “We played too passive and weren’t physical enough on the glass and they beat us up pretty good. We cut the lead to single-digits in the fourth quarter, but kind of emptied the tank and we didn’t have enough to get over the top.”

Luke Miller and Tanner Groves scored eight points each for Kellogg (6-3), which faces the loser of Clarkston/Annie Wright in a consolation game today at noon.

Kase Wynott scored 27 points for Lapwai (6-0), which faces the winner in a semifinal game.
