PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lake City, Post Falls finish second in Tarkanian Classic brackets

| December 22, 2021 1:17 AM

LAS VEGAS — Lake City’s shot at a Tarkanian Classic title rimmed out as time expired, and the Timberwolves fell to Spring Valley of Las Vegas 48-47 in the Diamond Bracket championship game on Tuesday at Durango High.

Lake City sophomore Kurtsten McKellips gave the Timberwolves a 47-46 lead with a pair of free throws with under a minute remaining, but Spring Valley guard Aaliyah Gayles, who has signed to play at USC next year, hit a putback jumper with 15 seconds remaining to take a 48-47 lead.

“Our legs were a little rough and we didn’t shoot the ball as well as we had been,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “I thought our rebounding was outstanding and that’s a high-level team we played. They’re a team that wants to turn you over 30 times a game, but I thought we handled their pressure well and I’m pleased with how we played today.”

Lake City (13-1) beat Bishop Loughlin of Brooklyn, N.Y., 54-31 in a semifinal game on Monday to advance.

“We’re just thrilled to get to play a championship game in a prestigious tournament so early in the season,” Anderson said. “To take care of the ball and fight the way that the girls did this weekend, I’m happy. It was a great experience. Each team we played relied on one kid to carry them, and with us, we have seven players and it’s unknown who’s going to step up on any given night. And the girls are just happy with that.”

Lake City travels to Chiawana of Pasco, Wash., on Jan. 4.
