PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Subs get their moment as Lake City wins big

COEUR d’ALENE — Following a weekend where the starters logged heavy minutes en route to bringing home a tournament title, Tuesday was a night for the reserves to shine.

Lake City jumped on top early and never looked back in a 66-34 victory over the visiting Shadle Park Highlanders.

“I’m very pleased with how tonight went,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “We needed to get some other kids out on the floor that haven’t gotten a lot of minutes, and that was important to us. Really good energy out on the floor the entire game.”

Blake Buchanan scored a game-high 15 points for Lake City (7-0), which had four players in double figures. Nathan Hocking added 13 points, Kolton Mitchell 12 and Deacon Kiesbuy, coming off the bench, had 10.

The Timberwolves were coming off a victory at the Owyhee Holiday Invitational last weekend at Owyhee High in Meridian.

“We were tired Monday at practice, which is totally understandable,” Winger said. “But shootaround today was great, and then out there on the floor tonight was really good. I thought we executed really well on defense. Offensively we were pretty solid. It was important to get a few more guys into the game than we did last weekend.”

Lake City led 38-15 and 58-27 after three quarters, triggering a running clock in the fourth.

Junior Kohlby Sorweide led Shadle (1-5) with 14 points.
