NIC BASKETBALL: Cardinal women rally to down Green River
• WOMEN
LYNNWOOD, Wash. — For whatever reason, the first 30 minutes wasn’t North Idaho College’s best.
But that last 10, that’s where coach Korina Baker is hoping her team will carry into conference play.
Layla Beam scored 14 points for the Cardinals, who outscored Green River 21-1 in the fourth quarter in a 52-43 win to conclude play in an NWAC Crossover at Edmonds Community College on Saturday.
“It was just a lot of extra effort and hustle,” Baker said. “We just didn’t have our hearts in the game for whatever reason. We played a lot tougher defense and got some stops, forced them to get sloppy with the ball and started knocking down shots left and right.”
NIC (5-3) went 3-0 in the tournament.
“We played well overall,” Baker said. “The girls are starting to find our rhythm. We found our strength is defense and saw that’s what we’re missing. We need to dig deep a little more, but once we figure that out, we’ll be strong.”
Kolby Pimperton scored 11 points for NIC, which opens Northwest Athletic Conference play against Columbia Basin on Jan. 5 at Rolly Williams Court.
Janae Kalama scored 15 points for Green River (1-8).
