TRI-STATE INVITATIONAL: Crowded at the top

| December 18, 2021 1:25 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — To be successful at the Tri-State Invitational, wrestlers and their coaches can’t be afraid to try new things.

It worked out well for Coeur d’Alene High and Sebastian Prangley as it turned out.

Prangley went 4-0 on the first day, winning in the quarterfinals at 160 pounds by pin over Zeke Crockett of Jenkins High.

“Sebastian was at 170 last week (at the Inland Empire Classic) at Central Valley, and we moved him to a more competitive weight,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “He just wrestled really well for being unseeded to get to the semifinals and had a great day. It was impressive to see.”

Prangley will be joined in the semifinals by fellow Vikings Demarco Piazza (152), Jaxson Washington (285) and Rylan Rogers (195). Coeur d’Alene is third with 108.5 points after the first day, trailing Flathead of Kalispell (110) and tournament leader Mead (120).

“Those guys just came out and took care of business today,” Moffat said. “I like the direction we’re headed with some guys in the consolation bracket. They’re not afraid to fight and mix it up, which is good to see.”

Rider Seguine (98), Tyson Barnhart (120), Gentry Smith (182) and Trevor Miller (195) advanced to the semifinals for Post Falls, which is fourth with 108 points. The Trojans won in 2019, the last year the tournament was held.

Jaren Knopp advanced to the semifinals at 98 pounds for Lakeland, which is 17th.

“He’s just a tough kid,” Lakeland coach Zach Horsely said of Knopp. “He just goes hard the entire time and always gives 100 percent. He always gives a full effort and that’s what it takes to succeed.”

Lake City’s Zach Macdonald (106) and Timberlake’s James Billingsley (220) also advanced to today’s semifinal round.

Wrestling resumes today at 9 a.m., with championship finals tentatively scheduled for 5 p.m.
