PREP WRESTLING: Lake City wins at West Valley Wrestle-Rama

| December 12, 2021 1:10 AM

SPOKANE VALLEY — Lake City had six wrestlers finish unbeaten on the day after beating Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls 60-24 to win the West Valley Wrestle-Rama title with a perfect 4-0 record on Saturday afternoon.

Zach Macdonald (106 pounds), Brycen Duboise (113), Blaine Leonard (126), Kenzie Lindsay (152), Grey Shinkle (195) and Xavier Johnson (285) led the way for Lake City, which beat Quincy 60-18, Freeman 51-15 and East Valley of Spokane 58-21 to advance to the finals.

“We had one decision win in that group of unbeaten kids,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “When they’re up in the match, they’re looking for pins and those bonus points. All of them did a good job of getting pins when they could. Brycen, who’s a freshman, had been wrestling pretty nervous all year, and today, he just relaxed and wrestled like he can. Hopefully he’s got some confidence and swagger after this match.”

Lake City will face Timberlake and Kellogg at Kellogg on Wednesday.

Rogers finishes runner-up

at Walsh Ironman

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio — Rylan Rogers, a senior at Coeur d’Alene High, finished runner-up at 190 pounds in the Walsh Ironman at Walsh High.

Rogers, seeded second in the 34-man bracket, lost by a 3-1 decision to Dylan Fishback of Aurora High in Ohio. Fishback signed to wrestle at N.C. State in November.

“He wrestled a great match, but just got taken down at the end to lose a heartbreaker,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “He’s disappointed, but wrestled really well all weekend. It was a great atmosphere and Rylan stepped up to the challenge and went toe to toe with the top kid in the nation and did an awesome job. This was probably the toughest tournament in the country, and his weight bracket was the toughest by far. He did a great job this weekend.”

Rogers, who signed with Michigan last month, beat Seth Shumate — a Ohio State commit — 3-1 in the semifinals on Saturday.
