POST FALLS — With Post Falls senior Luke Martin making his first appearance in the lineup at 220 pounds on Thursday, Trojan coach Pete Reardon wasn’t quite sure where he’d be conditioning wise.
As it turned out, Martin was where he needed to be.
Martin pinned Lake City’s Grey Shinkle in double overtime, one of five pins for the Trojans in a 62-15 win over the Timberwolves on Thursday night at The Arena.
“Luke was really, really focused tonight,” Reardon said. “He was coming off being dinged up, and sometimes you wonder if a kid is in shape, and tonight everything was clicking. He kept a good pace and when he needed to put pressure on him (Shinkle), he just found a way. And I’m proud of him for that.”
Shinkle was scheduled to wrestle at 195, but was bumped to 220 just before the match.
“Grey wrestled a great match,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “We thought it was a better matchup, and he just got caught. He scrapped really hard and we had a couple of those matches that really could have gone either way.”
Seth Martin (145), Jose Laguna (170), Austin Portner (285) and Alex Austin (138) also had pins for Post Falls.
“Our guys were aggressive and going after the bonus points,” Reardon said. “We got the edge on them in some tough matches. Luke finding a way to win was super cool to see. Trey Smith, a freshman, won 6-4 in a tough match and showed a lot of character.”
Freshman Garrett Leonard won by pin at 160 pounds for Lake City, which competes at the West Valley Duals tournament on Saturday.
“For Garrett to step up and perform like that was huge,” Owen said. “Post Falls is the class of the year and handed it to us tonight. Hopefully we can learn some lessons from this one.”
Post Falls travels to Lewiston tonight at 6.
