PREP BASKETBALL: After rough start, Lake City boys roll at Moscow

| December 10, 2021 1:20 AM

• BOYS

MOSCOW — Bad roads, a late arrival and not a lot of time to warm up.

Then, facing a loud home crowd and a hot opponent, the Lake City Timberwolves quickly fell behind the Moscow Bears 16-7 in the first quarter Thursday night at Bear Den.

But Lake City got the deficit down to two points by the end of the quarter, then blitzed Moscow 51-16 in the middle two quarters and finished off the Bears 72-46 in nonleague play.

“Even though we ended up winning fairly big, this was a good game for us,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “We got smacked in the mouth in the first quarter, and after that … the third quarter we had about a 4-5 minute stretch that was quite frankly as good as I’ve seen in a while. We played extremely well defensively and offensively; a lot of fast breaks. We just played super basketball to finish it out.”

Kolton Mitchell totaled 25 points, seven assists (to just one turnover) and five rebounds for Lake City (3-0). Junior Blake Buchanan, who transferred from Moscow after his freshman season, added 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Nathan Hocking had 12 points and nine boards.

Junior Zach Johnson, who missed the T-Wolves’ first two games with an ankle injury, made his season debut with four points and six rebounds.

“He played well,” Winger said. “He’s a big presence in that keyhole, offensively and defensively. It’s super good to have him back.”

Bryden Brown and Ian Hillman each scored 10 for Moscow (2-2).

Lake City returns to action next Thursday at the Owyhee Holiday Invitational in Meridian.
