Real paradise requires the right people

Four distinct, awe-inspiring seasons.

One of the most gorgeous lakes in the country, surrounded by mountains, forests and prairies.

Easy access to interstate highways and a good international airport.

Excellent medical facilities and vibrant arts, entertainment and eating options.

Low taxes. Quality public education.

These are some of the magnets that have been drawing people to our community for years now. Mother Nature deserves a standing ovation, no question, for her little North Idaho masterpiece. But it is leadership, the human kind, that so beautifully complements the natural attractions.

In our view, the greater Coeur d’Alene area has been blessed with outstanding leaders in the business and nonprofit sectors, generating a higher quality of life than many similar resort communities. Some of those leaders were appropriately in the spotlight last night.

The Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber chose wisely in honoring the following shining stars:

• Citizen of the Year: Coeur d’Alene Mayor Steve Widmyer

• Nonprofit: Heritage Health

• Large business: Northwest Specialty Hospital

• Small Business: Advanced Benefits

• Volunteer: Ann Thomas

• Committee: Public Education

Something all of these organizations and individuals have in common is a relentless pursuit of community building. Not urban sprawl — the kind of building focused on providing a safe, healthy place for businesses, workers, retirees, visitors.

The Coeur d’Alene area is not immune to the strife that is dividing our country. Political rancor is at its peak. Anger can be pervasive. Even here, neighbors can be downright unneighborly.

But when you look at people like Widmyer, like Rick Rasmussen from Northwest Specialty (and the 2019 Citizen of the Year), like the leaders and members of the other groups and organizations, you realize that each is a uniter. They are uniformly dedicated to the proposition that characteristics like kindness, respect and cooperation will continue to make this area a place people want to live, work and play.

The Press salutes them, each and every one, and congratulates the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber on choosing wisely.
