• WRESTLING

COEUR d’ALENE — For a first time out, Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat found out a lot about his squad.

Where they are, as well as need to be in the coming weeks.

“We found out we’re not in great shape and have some things to work on,” said Moffat, whose team beat East Valley 81-6 and Lakeland 62-15 to open the season on Wednesday at Elmer Jordan Court. “We were aggressive and trying to score points, which was a positive for a lot of our guys.”

Coeur d’Alene competes in the Inland Empire Classic on Friday and Saturday at Central Valley High.

Zach Macdonald (106 pounds) and Blaine Leonard (126) went unbeaten on the night for Lake City, which beat East Valley 59-18.

“The kids are wrestling hard,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “The effort is there, but we’re still making some early season mistakes. We need to fix them and continue to make those improvements going forward. As long as they improve, I think we’ll be there at the end of the year.”

Lake City travels to Post Falls tonight.

Devon Suko (170) and Matt Williams (113) went unbeaten on the night for Lakeland, which beat Lake City 48-32.

“We wrestled really well and I can’t think of a moment where we didn’t give 100 percent effort the entire time,” Lakeland coach Zach Horsley said. “And that was good to see. I knew they were a gritty group of kids, but their effort was off the charts as a whole.”

Lakeland competes in the Inland Empire Classic on Friday and Saturday at Central Valley High in Spokane Valley.

SPOKANE — Sophia Zufelt hit a 3-pointer with 1:22 remaining off an assist from Emberlyn Reynolds to push the Timberwolves past the Bullpups in a nonleague game at Gonzaga Prep.

“We haven’t shot the ball well in the last couple of games, but we did a lot of adjustments and made it happen tonight,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “We rebounded the ball harder than we’ve done all year and I’m really proud of how they fought, scrapped and adjusted.”

Zufelt had 15 points and Reynolds 11 for Lake City (9-0), which travels to Sandpoint for an Inland Empire League game on Tuesday.

“Emberlyn was huge for us tonight,” Anderson said. “She had three straight baskets to start the third and really went after it and caused some problems at the rim. She really changed the game for us in the second half.”

Sitara Byrd scored 23 points for Gonzaga Prep (2-1).

Arianna Havier-Gorr had nine points for Lakeside, which trailed 12-8 after the first quarter shot 11 of 20 from the free throw line in the game, but made 5 of 8 in the fourth quarter.

“It was an evenly matched game and went back and forth all night,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “Jolissa, Ashlee and Arianna had good games, and both Kiona (Allen) and Destiny (Matt) hit big shots in the fourth quarter. We were able to make some free throws when we needed to. It was nice to have some good competition and good to get that.”

Lakeside (4-1) hosts Deary on Saturday.
