RESPECT: Show some, teach it

Americans should have attitudes of gratitude on Veteran’s Day and every day — make every day special for American veterans and our military. We’re free only because of unselfish sacrifices of active military and veterans who have given their lives and limbs so the rest of us can experience the freedoms that ALL of us have enjoyed.

As a young boy, I watched my older brother and cousin march off to World War II. My cousin was killed in Germany and my brother was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. He never spoke much of his war experience but in my eyes and heart he’ll always remain my hero. Sadly, my cousin didn’t have the opportunity to marry, raise a family and live the American dream. He was one of many patriots who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country’s freedom.

I love my country, my flag and my National Anthem. It is such a blessing to live in America. There’s nothing quite as breathtaking and heartwarming as Old Glory waving in the breeze. So when others dishonor my country by refusing to cross their hearts and choose to kneel for the National Anthem, it rubs me in a very bad way! Respect and love for our country must start at home and at an early age — it obviously will NOT be taught in our school system. One of my most heartfelt moments happened at a wrestling match in Kellogg. Two young boys (spectators) were standing in the corner of the gym, hands over their hearts, at rigid attention while the flag was lowered and fully raised! God bless their parents! And may America bless God!
