PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Post Falls starts hot, downs Lakeland

| December 8, 2021 1:21 AM

RATHDRUM — Post Falls started on fire, but so did Lakeland for a while.

The Trojans managed to remain that way in their Inland Empire League opener at Hawk Court on Tuesday.

Americus Crane scored 15 of her 19 points in the first quarter, hitting three 3-pointers in the first quarter of a 66-37 win over the Hawks.

“Post Falls came out hot, and we were pretty warm ourselves,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “We did a lot of things well in the first half. In the second half, Post Falls was just a step quicker than we were, did a much better job defensively, and we couldn’t get the ball to fall in the second half.”

Addie Kiefer scored 16 of her 19 in the first half for Lakeland (2-4).

“We played well defensively tonight,” Seymour said. “But we needed a few more shots to fall to stay with them and it didn’t happen.”

Post Falls (5-0, 1-0 IEL) travels to Sandpoint on Friday.

Lakeland (2-4, 0-2) hosts Lewiston on Friday.

SANDPOINT — Senior Skylar Burke had 26 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Vikings in an Inland Empire League win over the Bulldogs at Les Rogers Court.

Coeur d’Alene outscored Sandpoint 24-4 in the second quarter to make it 30-10 at halftime.

“We came out really flat,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons said. “We just weren’t fully ready to go. This was our first road trip of the year, though it was a short one. We had a slow start, but changed up our defense to get some more energy, and the girls got going.”

Burke scored 10 points in the second quarter.

“She always gives us full throttle each game,” Symons said. “Her outside shooting has improved over the last two years and she can get to the basket whenever she wants to. She’s kind of our go-to girl. Sandpoint always plays hard. Coach (Will) Love always has his girls ready to play. They got in our faces and we struggled to get into the flow early on.”

Junior Madi Symons had 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals for Coeur d’Alene (5-0, 1-0 IEL), which travels to Moscow on Friday.

Daylee Driggs had eight points and six rebounds for Sandpoint (2-3, 0-1), which hosts Post Falls on Friday.

MOSCOW — Senior Kendall Pickford hit six 3-pointers, five in the first half, and finished with 19 points as the visiting Timberwolves overcame a slow start to beat the Bears in Inland Empire League play at Bear Den.

Sophomore Kamryn Pickford, Kendall’s sister, added three 3s and scored all 11 of her points in the second half for Lake City (8-0, 3-0 IEL), which led 23-16 at halftime.

“She’s shooting the ball very well,” Lake City coach James Anderson said of Kendall Pickford, the team’s lone senior, who also hit six 3s in Saturday’s win over Meridian. “She saved us in the first half, when we weren’t moving the ball well. Moscow came out with a lot more energy than we did, and Kendall’s senior leadership came through. The ball moved more in the second half, and defense was better.”

Megan Heyns and Jessika Lassen each scored eight points for Moscow (2-4, 0-2).

Lake City plays at Gonzaga Prep tonight at 7.
