PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Vikings honor Haynes, use big third quarter to run away from Sandpoint

| December 8, 2021 1:30 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Leading by just three at halftime, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings hit four of their seven 3-pointers and outscored the Sandpoint Bulldogs 28-10 in the third quarter en route to a 69-44 victory Tuesday night in the Inland Empire League opener for both teams at Viking Court.

Steven Burgess made two 3s and scored 10 of his game-high 14 points in the third quarter for Coeur d’Alene (3-0). Alexander Nipp scored seven of his nine points in the third, and Cooper Larson hit both of his 3s in the third.

“We’re making some good, smart halftime adjustments,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “They ran a 2-3 zone defense and we were tentative early on. Burgess came out and knocked down some big shots, and our outside shots started to fall.”

Parker Childs led Sandpoint (1-2) with 10 points.

Prior to the game, Coeur d’Alene honored former Viking coach Don Haynes, who died last September in Sandpoint at age 91, following a decorated coaching career that spanned four decades.

“It was important for a lot of people, me included,” said Adams, who played for Haynes at Coeur d’Alene in the early 1990s. “It was important for a lot of people that Donny touched in so many ways. He had a huge impact on so many lives.”

Donny’s son, Tyler, and wife, Shirley, were recognized before the game.

“Shirley was like a second mom to me,” Adams said. “I told her today that every day there isn’t something I say in practice that isn’t related to Donny.”

Tyler Haynes, who later coached at Sandpoint High, played for his dad at Coeur d’Alene in the 1988-89 season.

Tyler said Adams contacted him shortly after Donny passed, and said he wanted to honor Donny, his wife and son in some way.

“It means a lot, knowing that dad touched a lot of people,” Tyler said. “I think that was his biggest skill. He just happened to coach basketball to do it. It was fun to see there was a lot of people here that felt a contact with him, and this was important for them as well.”

Coeur d’Alene returns to action next Thursday at home vs. Central Valley.
