PASTOR: Misunderstands morality

| December 8, 2021 1:00 AM

It was sad to read a piece by a pastor with so little basis in reality.

To begin, I am a white cisgender male who took a long time accepting the joy of LBGTQ progress in American society. But something can only be a moral issue if it is a matter of choice. Sexual orientation is not a matter of choice, it is a matter of inborn fact. So it is not a moral issue.

Gay and transgender individuals have been part of every society since the dawn of man, regardless of the degree of suppression or acceptance. Over my many years as a pediatrician, it became clear that children gradually woke to their inner selves as they grew. They were not deciding to lead immoral lives.

This sometimes happened at a very young age. Dealing with this growing awareness, and the hurdles they will face in our culture, needs and deserves just the kind of support being provided at the library. We all benefit when these young people become well adjusted, productive members of society, not closeted outcasts.
