LIBRARY: Access vs. sponsorship

| December 8, 2021 1:00 AM

The editorial, “There’s no purity test for public” in Sunday’s paper relies on a series of false comparisons. I am assuming you are referring to the controversy regarding the protesters outside the Post Falls library upset about the LBGTQ use of the building and a local pastor saying that God would not approve.

You mentioned that schools may provide space for different churches and that political groups may meet in public buildings, which is true. Where you completely got off the rails is not recognizing that the Community Library Network is not just allowing a group to use their space, they are sponsoring the event. It is their program. They are providing refreshments and perhaps staff to supervise the event.

Hopefully, you can see the significant difference between the former and the latter and why your editorial lacks credibility. I would expect you to correct this.

The real question is whether our tax dollars should be used to facilitate and be a proponent of a divisive political/moral issue. I think I know what the majority of taxpayers in Kootenai County would say.
