PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Coeur d'Alene shoots away from Moscow late

| December 7, 2021 1:15 AM

MOSCOW — Coeur d’Alene hit nine 3-pointers, including four in the fourth quarter and three of those from Tugg Wellsandt, as the Vikings pulled away from the Moscow Bears 66-59 in a nonleague game Monday night at Bear Den.

Wellsandt scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter for Coeur d’Alene (2-0). Logan Orchard hit one of his two 3s in the fourth, and finished with 10 points.

“Those 3s were really huge,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “And both the Larson brothers, Cooper and Gunner, took charges in the fourth quarter, and they were just as huge, as far as stopping momentum.”

Steven Burgess hit three 3s in the first half and scored 19 of his gamehigh 23 points before intermission for Coeur d’Alene. Cameren Cope added 12 points.

“Burgess really controlled the whole game,” Adams said. “In the second half, Cam went to work.”

Bryden Brown led Moscow (2-1) with 20 points.

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Sandpoint tonight at 7.

Prior to the game, a moment of silence will be held to remember the late Don Haynes, a 1948 Coeur d’Alene High grad who coached the Vikings from 1988-92.

Haynes, who retired in Sandpoint following a legendary coaching career, died in September at age 91. His son Tyler, who played for him at CHS in 1988-89, later coached at Sandpoint High. Family members are expected to be on hand.
