PREP WRESTLING: Trojans finish runner-up at Sidney Invitational

SIDNEY, Mont. — Tyson Barnhart (120 pounds), Jose Laguna (170) and Gentry Smith (182) claimed individual titles for Post Falls at the season-opening Sidney Invitational on Saturday evening.

Barnhart defeated Payton Hernandez of Columbia 9-7 in overtime in his championship match. Laguna defeated Wyatt Springer of Lake Stevens 4-2 and Smith edged William Loveridge of Huntley Project 5-4 for his championship.

Other Post Falls placers were Rider Seguine (second at 103), Alex Austin (third at 138), Walker Rouse (sixth at 138), Trey Smith (sixth at 126), Austin Portner (sixth at 285), Bradley Mason (seventh at 132) and Zack Campbell (eighth at 113).

Post Falls finished second with 176 points, four points ahead of tournament host Sidney.

Columbia of Nampa won the tournament with 198.5 points.

Blaine Leonard wins at 132

at Owen Invitational

POLSON, Mont. — Lake City junior Blaine Leonard won the 126-pound bracket on Saturday at the Owen Invitational at Linderman Elementary School.

Leonard won his first three matches by pin, then beat Decker Milender of Superior 10-8 in the finals.

“He performed great all weekend long,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said of Leonard. “Last year he had the problem of being up in matches and getting caught and pinned, and this weekend he was solid in every match. This weekend, he really wrestled mistake-free; it was fun to watch.”

Zach Macdonald of Lake City finished second at 113, losing by pin to Ridge Cole of Ronan in the finals.

Kenzie Lindsay was third at 152 for the Timberwolves, Xavier Johnson was fourth at 285 and Garrett Leonard was fifth at 160.

“We have seven seniors, but only one had been in this tournament before,” Owen said. “It’s nice to finally give them their chance, and they wrestled like seniors.”

Lake City finished fourth with 126 points, three points behind third-place Ronan. The top three teams received trophies. Columbia Falls won with 222.5 points, and Frenchtown was second with 171.

Lake City wrestles East Valley and Lakeland on Wednesday at Coeur d’Alene High.

Tweedy, Sibert win

at Griswold tourney

POTLATCH — Landon Tweedy (120) and Kyle Sibert (220) won their respective weight classes in the Dick Griswold Memorial Tournament at Potlatch High.

Kody Tefft (second at 132), Eli Villa (182) and Landon Warren (285) were second, Adam Rouse (220) and Jackson Nantell (fourth at 285) also placed for St. Maries, which finished third with 144.5 points.

Keanyn DeGrot won at 220 for Post Falls, which claimed the team title with 205 points. Clearwater Valley was second with 204.

Wyatt Hei (113) and Kolter Wood (126) won for Kellogg, which finished fifth.
