PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Childs notches first win as Sandpoint coach

| December 5, 2021 1:10 AM

SPOKANE VALLEY — Jacob Eldridge and Parker Childs had 11 points each for Sandpoint, which beat the East Valley Knights 63-55 for the Bulldogs’ first win under coach Brian Childs.

“I’m happy for our kids,” said Childs, a former head coach at Coeur d’Alene Charter and assistant at Lake City. “It was good to see the smiles on their faces.”

It was the Bulldogs’ first win since Jan. 19, 2021 at Priest River.

Sandpoint led 30-29 at the half and outscored East Valley 18-12 in the third quarter.

"Jacob Eldridge made some plays down the stretch that you kind of hope a senior is going to make," coach Childs said.

Sandpoint (1-1) travels to Coeur d'Alene at 7 p.m. Tuesday to open 5A-4A Inland Empire League play.

Sophomore Neil McCarthy added 14 points for Post Falls (1-2). Jack Sciortino, a reserve last year and the lone returnee, had 12 points and seven assists.

“We had 13 assists tonight; we were able to share the ball again,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “I’m happy where we are defensively. The first quarter I wasn’t happy with the penetration we were allowing. But the second quarter we buckled down, got out on the shooters and finished it off with a good rebound.

“We are 12 quarters into this, and we have gotten better each quarter.”

Post Falls plays host to Mead next Saturday.

SPOKANE VALLEY — The visiting Hawks tied it with a minute to play, but Turner Livingston hit a 3-pointer with some 30 seconds left to put the host Eagles ahead for good in the Border Clash.

Lakeland (1-2) missed on its next trip down the floor and had to foul, and West Valley pulled away from the free-throw line.

“It’s about the process right now,” first-year Lakeland coach Tony Hanna said. “We were a little better tonight than last night (in a 60-54 loss to East Valley). We just don’t have a ton of varsity experience. Our pieces are there.”

Bryce Henry, a senior and returning starter, scored 20 points for Lakeland.

“Bryce had a really good game for us,” Hanna said. “He got to the hoop quite a bit, got to the free-throw line quite a bit.”

Livingston led West Valley with 13 points.

Lakeland’s game at St. Maries on Tuesday was rescheduled for Monday, Dec. 13 due to a shortage of officials. The Hawks return to action Friday at home vs. Lewiston.
