LIBRARIES: Community treasures

| December 4, 2021 1:00 AM

Libraries are marvelous places that belong to us all. Thank you to to all the Community Library Network staff for providing wonderful, safe learning environments.

Many years ago I visited the Hayden Library with my preschool grandchildren to attend another fun, creative, well-planned activity program. Energy, excitement, and expectations were in the air. Just as we walked through the front door my granddaughter looked up at me and said, “I love the library, Grammy.” She was “hooked” — the start of future years spent visiting a wonderful and safe place for learning and exploring.

It was always fun to discover what was happening at the library— fire engines, art and craft classes, musical productions, group activities indoors and outside, hands-on science experiments ... and books, books, books.

It’s my favorite place, too. We feel comfortable. We feel welcomed. We feel excited to find new books and ideas. The library staff works to meet the interests of all ages. Libraries evolve and change as our communities grow and change. Libraries represent the very best of America, including tolerance and hope for the future.

P.S. A suggested reading, especially for library board members—The Library Book by Susan Orleans (available at your local library or bookmobile in print, audio, digital format).
