Think outside the box
Armed with tape, pipe cleaners, construction paper, glue and cardboard, over 200 students and parents in the Lakeland Joint School District gathered for the fourth annual Global Cardboard Challenge at Lakeland Middle School on Oct. 27.
The school cafeteria was turned into an innovative workshop where kids could plan, engineer and build anything they could dream. Designs included submarines, a walking dinosaur, an old western town complete with a train and more.
The event was put on by the Advanced Learning Program teachers. The ALP program, funded through local levy dollars, is at each of the six elementary schools within the LJSD.
The program provides opportunities for students to grapple with concepts and collaboratively work to solve problems using the tools available to them, forcing them to “think outside the box.”
“I love seeing parents and kids play together, have fun and create,” said Julie Anderson, Advanced Learning Program teacher at Athol Elementary.
Betty Kiefer Elementary School hosted a cardboard challenge at their annual Dinner and a Book night and Garwood Elementary School shared top student designs at their Fall Festival hosted by the Parent Teacher Organization.
