REAGAN: Is there another out there?

| December 1, 2021 1:00 AM

Having been under the leadership of Ronald Reagan for nearly 20% of my life, as governor and as president, I yearn and pray for such a leader once again.

He was a positive, forward-looking man of vision as he methodically laid the groundwork for the demise of the Soviet Union and the end of the cold war. He was a unifying leader of men. His leadership style put this into practice. He said, “Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don’t interfere.”

He was a true gentleman who never dealt in the slash and burn rhetoric of today’s politics. He didn’t set out to destroy his opponents, he disarmed them. Remember this toward Walter Mondale? “I promise not to use my opponent’s youth and inexperience against him.” Mondale cracked up.

He was not anti-government, just big government. “You can’t be for big government, big taxes, and big bureaucracy and still be for the little guy.”

And finally, “I have found a great hunger in America for a spiritual revival, for a belief that law must be based on a higher Law; for a return to traditions and values we once had…”
