PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Post Falls starts fast, downs Central Valley in opener

| December 1, 2021 1:25 AM

POST FALLS — For an opener, it didn’t look like out of the start for Post Falls in the first five minutes on Tuesday at The Arena.

Then, it did for a little bit.

Senior guards Trinidie Nichols and Lexi Heath scored 15 points each for the Trojans, who jumped out to a 26-3 lead in the first five minutes, beating the Central Valley Bears 65-47 in the nonleague opener for both.

“We got off to a good start,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “We got some turnovers and got into transition and were able to build a bit of a lead. In that first five minutes, we jumped on them pretty good.”

Heath had eight rebounds, Nichols five rebounds and five steals for Post Falls.

“I liked our energy and the way we started,” Allert said. “Defensively, we have some things to work on. We did some good things throughout the game. Offensively, we were a little up and down, but that’s to be expected for the first game of the year.”

Americus Crane had nine points and five assists for Post Falls, which hosts Meridian on Thursday.

Autumn Agnew scored 16 points for Central Valley.

RATHDRUM — For the host Hawks, it was just one of those nights from the free-throw line.

Lakeland finished 18 of 41 from the line, while the visiting Wildcats were 13 of 16 in a nonleague win at Hawk Court.

“We started well and then found ourselves out of position defensively and Kellogg made a nice run in the second quarter,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “We did a good job of responding in the third quarter and had some momentum, but lost some assignments defensively. It was just a few missed opportunities and Kellogg did a good job of executing at the end of the game.”

Senior Addie Kiefer had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Kenna Simon eight rebounds and Ziya Munyer eight rebounds for Lakeland (1-2), which competes in the Border Clash on Friday, facing East Valley at West Valley High.

“Addie had a great game,” Seymour said. “She played terrific and did a great job of pulling back into it. We got close, but weren’t able to finish it.”

Hailey Cheney had 17 points and eight rebounds for Kellogg (3-1), which travels to Clark Fork on Thursday.

“We played pretty organized on defense tonight,” Kellogg coach Jana Nearing said. “All of our girls were really consistent tonight. Lakeland did a good job of putting pressure on us, and we were able to find a way to handle it late.”
