Local chapter invites entries for DAR essay contests

| August 26, 2021 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — The Lt. George Farragut Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, is sponsoring two American history essay contests for local students in grades 5 to 12.

Both contests are open to students in public, private or parochial schools and homeschoolers.

"This is an opportunity for students to put on their thinking caps and exercise their creativity and writing skills as they consider the topics for this year’s essay contests, a press release said.

The topic for grades five through eight celebrates the 100th anniversary of the dedication of The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

One chapter winner in each grade will be awarded $50 and advance to the state-level competition.

The contest for high schoolers focuses on the men and women —famous and unknown — who influenced the course of the American Revolution and the founding of a new nation.

A $200 award is given to the chapter winner of this contest, and the winning essay advances to the state-level competition.

The deadline for entries is Dec. 15.
