Back-to-school clothing giveaway Saturday

| August 20, 2021 1:00 AM

First Presbyterian Church will have its annual clothing giveaway for elementary school students from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

It includes both new and used clothing that has been cleaned and sorted. The selection includes tops, bottoms, winter coats, hats and gloves, new underwear, socks and some shoes and boots.

Those who participate will receive a bag upon entry and may fill it with the free items.

The event dates back to 1983, when second-grade teacher Barb McPoland noticed some children were lacking back-to-school clothing. She approached her fellow deacons at First Presbyterian with an idea: collect clothing for students and give it away.

"This mission of love was approved and the rest is history, 38 years later," a press release said.

The church collects clothing and cash donations throughout the year given by congregation members and local businesses for the annual giveaway.
