Theater seeking 'shadow actors' for special-need performers

| August 13, 2021 1:00 AM

Out of the Shadows Theater, a theater specifically for special-needs actors, is holding auditions for its fifth production, “Bye Bye Birdie -Young Performers’ Edition,” on Aug. 17 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lake City Community Center.

The goal of Celebrate Incorporated, a non-profit organization presenting Out of the Shadows Theater, is to provide adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities the opportunity and support to experience and participate in performing arts. Each cast member is accompanied by a “shadow actor,” a non-disabled person who supports and encourages the actor in their role.

“We expect a good turnout, but we especially need people to come and offer their time to be shadow actors,” Lorna Hamilton, artistic director, said. “It is difficult to explain just how fulfilling this process is, and honestly it has changed people’s attitudes toward their contribution to community and overall life values. It has impacted me greatly.”

Auditions are open primarily to ages 18 to 80, with roles for at least 25 cast members along with a shadow actor for each actor. Shadow actors do not need to audition but are encouraged to come to auditions to meet the actors and directors.

The production runs Oct. 29 through 31, and Nov. 5 through 7.
