Coeurimba to perform tonight

| August 6, 2021 1:00 AM

The Music Conservatory of Coeur d'Alene, 627 N. Government Way will be hosting Coeurimba on the lawn at 7 p.m. Friday.

"The African marimba arts with a variety of soprano, alto, tenor and bass instruments bring an unusual warm harmony and joyful sound," a press release said. "Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and enjoy the spirit of this ethnic music and the wonderful community where we live."

The Coeur d’Alene Marimba Band came together in 1983 and has been performing at dances, folk festivals and concerts around the Pacific Northwest ever since.

Their founder, Thomas Orjala, soon abbreviated the band name to COEURIMBA to ease the pronunciation, “Coeur” standing for our home town and “rimba” meaning wooden voice, and the group has been sharing the Shona African music on their traditional African marimbas for over 35 years.

Many of the players now are teachers who have taken the upbeat music to several elementary schools so students can enjoy the excitement of creating rhythms with their mallets and full orchestration with their classmates on the instruments.

"The Coeurimba players’ names and faces have changed through the years, and they are still performing with the same energy and dedication to the fun and magic of the marimba music," the release said.

The concert is free. Donations are accepted.
