On air for cats and canines

The Kootenai Humane Society is hoping to raise at least $25,000 during its second virtual telethon broadcast live on Facebook from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

The program will showcase some of KHS’s adopted pets and the people who gave them homes, as well as highlight the needs of the shelter, including raising money to build a new home, and canines and cats that still need homes.

“We are in desperate need of funds to take care of all the medical expenses for all these little guys,” said Vicky Nelson, KHS development director.

KXLY’s Mark Peterson will host the event.

A few of the stories that will be shared include one about a dog that came to KHS with a badly infected and broken front leg.

“He’s coming back this year with his new owners,” Nelson said.

All 66 dogs that came to KHS from a Kellogg hoarding situation earlier this year have been adopted, and two will be on the telethon with their new owners.

Hayden’s Griffen Turnbull, recently crowned Mrs. Idaho, will join the broadcast. She has adopted animals at KHS.

KHS currently has about 80 dogs and cats that need homes.

To find the telethon, go to the KHS Facebook page. There will be phone numbers to call to donate during the show.

Nelson is confident they can top last year’s telethon that brought in about $25,000 in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

People can donate now at the KHS website, too.

“They don’t have to sit until Friday,” Nelson said.
