Idaho assistant football coach Cinkovich retires

MOSCOW — Assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Kris Cinkovich has retired after eight seasons with the Vandals and nearly 30 years of coaching.

“Thank you to Coach Paul Petrino and the University of Idaho for a great 8 ½ years on the Palouse,” Cinkovich said in a university news release. “At the end of May my wife Joanie and I are retiring and moving back to Las Vegas. We are excited for the next chapter in our lives. We will cherish the time we spent here and the people we met.

“Go Vandals!”

During his time in Moscow, Cinkovich coached 10 all-conference offensive lineman, including All-American Noah Johnson. Several Vandals in his position groups have moved on to play professionally, both in the NFL and the CFL.

“I’d just really like to thank Coach Cink for everything he did for this program,” Petrino said. “He’s been here with me the whole time. He worked his tail off, did a great job recruiting, always did everything he could for the players. He was a great mentor, great offensive line coach and did a really good job of coordinating the offense. I just can’t thank him enough. He’s one of my good friends.

“I wish him and Joanie a great retirement. They can enjoy life, they’ve worked hard for a long time. I’ve always been very close with him and his family, and I wish him the best in everything that he does. I just want to tell him thanks one more time.”

Cinkovich's coaching career began at Las Vegas High where he led the program to unprecedented success and the 2001 state championship. He won three regional titles in nine years and had the Wildcats ranked among the best in the west three times by USA Today. Cinkovich also spent time at UNLV and Arkansas before joining Idaho.

WHL clears Tri-City to resume team activities

The Western Hockey League announced the Tri-City Americans have been cleared to resume team activities, after all individuals within the team cohort tested negative for COVID-19 this week.

The Americans are scheduled to return to game play tonight when they visit the Spokane Chiefs in a 6 p.m. game.

The Americans practiced Monday evening for the first time since entering a league-mandated isolation period following the discovery of a positive test for COVID-19 on April 16. Though one additional positive test for COVID-19 was discovered within the Americans' team cohort, this occurred while the individuals were in isolation and does not impact upon the initial start of the 10-day isolation period required by the Washington State Department of Health.

The five postponed games on the U.S. Division schedule will not be rescheduled. As a result, the teams in the U.S. Division will complete their regular season schedules having played the following number of games:

Portland Winterhawks 24, Everett Silvertips 23, Seattle Thunderbirds 23, Spokane Chiefs 21 and Tri-City Americans 19.

Chiawana hoops star signs with Boise State

BOISE — Kobe Young, a 6-foot-5 wing from Chiawana High in Pasco, Wash., signed a national letter of intent to join the Boise State men’s basketball program, Broncos coach Leon Rice announced Tuesday. Young will enroll as a freshman this summer.

“Kobe is a phenomenal athlete, a great student and has a tremendous work ethic,” Rice said. “He really catches your attention on the basketball court with his athleticism and ability to shoot the ball.”

A multi-sport athlete at Chiawana, Young is set to begin his pandemic-delayed senior basketball season this month.

Young was recently ranked as the No. 12 basketball prospect in Washington according to Scorebook Live. Young also carries a three-star ranking as a wide receiver at 247Sports and was entertaining an offer to join the football program at Washington before signing with Boise State.

On the football field, Young helped the Riverhawks win three consecutive Mid-Columbia Conference championships. He was a second-team all-conference selection at wide receiver and defensive line this season.

Currently running track for Chiawana, Young recently ran an 11.14 in the 100 meters to rank second in the state of Washington. He also competes in the high jump.

Young missed the majority of his junior sports seasons due to injury.

Boise State has signed three incoming freshmen to National Letters of Intent for the upcoming year. Tyson Degenhart, from Mt. Spokane High, and Texas native R.J. Keene signed in November.
