COEUR d’ALENE — A man is being held on $150,000 bail after police said he left meth in reach of his 8-year-old child while the pair were sleeping in a car.

The 36-year-old Osburn man is charged with possession of a controlled substance and injury to a child, both felonies. He is also charged with driving under the influence, a misdemeanor.

Police responded to a Coeur d’Alene minimart around 1:30 a.m. Monday regarding a welfare check.

At the premises, a man was reportedly sleeping inside a running car that was parked halfway on the sidewalk.

The car was full of garbage, police said, and several knives were laid out on the dashboard, including one with the blade exposed.

Police said they could not rouse the man from outside the car.

Upon opening the driver’s side door, police reportedly observed an 8-year-old child curled up under a seat cover on the passenger side.

The child allegedly said he had tried to wake his father multiple times but was unsuccessful.

It took several attempts for officers to wake the man, according to court documents. He reportedly told police he had used meth recently.

A search of the vehicle allegedly yielded about 1.7 grams of meth, found in a backpack behind the driver’s seat.

Police arrested the man at the scene.

Idaho Health and Welfare sheltered the child.

Judge Timothy Van Valin ordered Monday that the man be held on $150,000 bail.
