PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene notches soggy sweep of Lake City

| April 25, 2021 1:15 AM

BASEBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — After a first game where Liam Paddack pitched a three-hit shutout and his team pounded out 14 hits, Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns called it his team’s best showing of the season.

Then, in the nightcap, Paddack struck with his bat, delivering a two-run bloop single in the seventh inning as the Vikings swept the Lake City Timberwolves 14-0 and 4-3 in Inland Empire League play on Saturday at Lake City High.

Paddack struck out 11 in a five-inning complete game in the opener.

“Liam has really been focusing on slowing down his delivery and reducing his amount of motion to the plate,” Karns said. “And I thought he had his greatest outing of the season. He gave us a great chance to compete in that game. We’re not giving up extra outs, giving up extra base hits and those things that we haven’t been consistent with. He did a great job of minimizing the bats in their lineup.”

Coeur d’Alene pitchers John Gwaltney, Troy Shepard and Alex Karns combined to allow one earned run in the second game.

“Those guys just competed for us on the mound and gave us a great chance to win,” Erik Karns said. “We came out a little flat in the second game, but were able to find a way to win.”

Eric Bumbaugh doubled in a run, and scored on a groundout to put Lake City up 2-0 in the first inning. Camdyn Martindale doubled and scored on a single by Breyson Coppess to make it 3-1 Lake City in the third.

Cooper Erickson led off the seventh with a single for Coeur d'Alene. Alex Karns' single with one out put runners on second and third for Paddack.

"After getting beat real bad in Game 1, the kids responded and played a much more competitive game in the second," Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. "They (the Vikings) just happened to get a couple hits off the end of the bat that fell in."

Coeur d’Alene (11-7, 10-7 IEL) hosts Sandpoint next Saturday to conclude the regular season.

Lake City (3-12, 3-12) travels to Post Falls for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

COEUR d’ALENE — Phoebe Schultze struck out 12 and allowed four hits in six innings of the first game, and Abby Jankay went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs as the Timberwolves blanked the visiting Vikings in IEL play.

The second game was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the first with no score. The teams hope to complete that game on May 6.

Jankay delivered a two-run single in a three-run first inning for Lake City (12-4, 10-4 IEL). Hope Bodak hit a two-run single in the third, and leadoff batter Austin Hill was 2 for 2 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Coeur d’Alene is 6-12, 6-8.

“Phoebe was very effective keeping CHS off balance today, and we were able to fight through the elements to get a nice win,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “I am a little disappointed we left so many runners (10) on base, but I have to give their pitcher (Kristine Schmidt) a lot of credit for not allowing those runners to score.”

On Tuesday in IEL play, Coeur d’Alene plays host to Sandpoint, and Lake City plays a doubleheader at Post Falls.

Sandpoint 1-3

LEWISTON — The action in the IEL doubleheader at Airport Park took a back seat following a scary moment in the first game.

In the bottom of the fourth inning with the Bulldogs trailing 8-1, Sandpoint senior pitcher Madi Garman took a line drive to the head.

"It's the worst thing I've ever seen in a softball game," Bulldogs coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams said. "It was a traumatic experience not only for us, but everyone watching the game."

Hawkins-Williams said Garman is doing well as of Saturday night and much better than expected given the situation. The line drive struck Garman so hard that the ball landed in the glove of Sandpoint's right fielder, Hawkins-Williams said.

Somehow, both teams had to try and keep playing a doubleheader after the incident and it wasn't easy. Tears filled the Sandpoint dugout the rest of the afternoon, Hawkins-Williams said.

"It became an emotional day for all of us after that," she said.

On the field, the Bengals were able to add three runs in the fifth inning to complete a 10-run rule victory over the Bulldogs in the first game.

Lewiston scored 13 runs in the first inning of the second game and Sandpoint could never recover.

Lewiston leads the IEL at 15-4, 9-3 IEL.

"I'm proud of their mental toughness through all of this because they kept on playing and they kept on working really hard to stay in the game," Hawkins-Williams said. "We're just hoping for the best for Madi."
