SOFTBALL

RATHDRUM — Olivia Staudinger belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth innings, and the Lakeland Hawks went on to score five times in the inning to beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs 11-7 and finish off a sweep of their Inland Empire League doubleheader Thursday at Lakeland High.

Lakeland won the opener 15-5 in six innings.

In the first game, Haylee Smit hit a two-run homer and finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Lakeland (9-10, 5-6 IEL). Hailey Gosch doubled and tripled and drove in four runs for the Hawks, and Erin Byrne went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs.

Lily Gammon was 3 for 4 and drove in two runs for Sandpoint (7-8, 2-6).

In the second game, Staudinger finished 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Lakeland.

Sandpoint built a 5-2 lead in the third inning on back-to-back run-scoring singles by Jacey Cash and Kaylee Brackett.

Lily Gammon went 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored for Sandpoint. She doubled in the tying run in the top of the sixth, then scored on a wild pitch to put the Bulldogs up 7-6.

After Staudinger’s blast, Harley See doubled in a run, and the Hawks scored twice more after that.

It was the first meeting of the season between the 4A IEL rivals, who have divvied up the league and regional titles for the last five years —Lakeland winning regional titles in 2015 and ’19, Sandpoint from 2016-18.

They’re scheduled to meet again May 6 in Sandpoint in the regular-season finale.

SANDPOINT — The host Bulldogs took advantage of nine errors by the Hawks in an Inland Empire League sweep at Memorial Field.

Caleb Jacobson hit a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning of the second game for Lakeland (1-17, 0-11 IEL), which was limited to four hits in the nightcap.

“I like that we didn’t quit and kept battling all the way through the second game,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “We had our chances offensively in the seventh inning with guys on second and third, but we couldn’t get the key hits we needed. We need to work on believing in ourselves and trusting that we have what it takes to win. I’m confident that if we can do that, then the scoreboard will start going in our favor.”

Max Thielbahr drove in three runs in the second game for Sandpoint (11-3, 6-3), which hosts Lewiston on Saturday at noon.
