PREP SOFTBALL: Coeur d'Alene fights back for split with IEL-leading Lewiston

| April 21, 2021 1:16 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Coeur d’Alene lost the opener in extra innings and lost their leader to injury in the second game, but that didn’t stop the Vikings from bouncing back to split a doubleheader with the league-leading Lewiston Bengals on Tuesday at Larry Schwenke Field.

Skylar Burke, who went 5 for 5 in the opener and finished 9 for 9 on the day, injured her left shoulder sliding into home in the fifth inning of the second game, as Coeur d’Alene (6-11, 6-7 IEL) rallied to take the lead.

Catherine Bakken hit a two-run double as the Vikings scored five times in the fifth to win the nightcap 8-5.

Lewiston won the opener 19-7 in eight innings.

“I told them, we’re going to be the thorn in everyone’s side this year. We have nothing to lose,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta, who has just one senior starter. “I feel like they feel like they have something to fight for. My girls want this, they really do, and they worked hard for it.”

Taryn Barney hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth to put Lewiston (13-4, 7-3) ahead 5-3.

In the first game, Kaydence Constable singled in Bekah West to cap a four-run seventh by the Vikings to force extra innings. Sophia Farrar delivered a two-run double earlier in the inning for Coeur d’Alene.

But the Bengals, held to three hits in the first seven innings, erupted for 18 hits and 14 runs in the eighth.

“It was frustrating; we had ‘em,” Darretta said. “We were outhitting them going into that eighth inning.”

Coeur d’Alene travels to Lake City on Saturday for an IEL doubleheader.
