League of Women Voters promotes involvement, education

| April 21, 2021 1:00 AM

The League of Women Voters of Idaho is rolling out a public education drive April 29 for the upcoming legislative and congressional reapportionment.

The LWV "People Powered Fair Maps Campaign" advocates for fair political maps throughout the nation, according to a press release.

"As a partner in this campaign, LWVID is focusing on civic education and encouraging public involvement," the release said.

Reapportionment is the process in which congressional and legislative districts are drawn to determine how communities are represented based on the most current census data.

"Idaho will use the 2020 census to equalize the population of districts by changing political boundaries. Changes in boundaries may change our political representation and will determine legislation that affects our lives," the release said.

The bipartisan Idaho Citizen Commission for Reapportionment is composed of six members who are not Idaho elected or appointed officials. The commission’s objective is to develop a district map that prioritizes equal population and fair representation. The commission must complete the mapmaking process within 90 days.

The LWVID says it is a nonpartisan organization.

An online forum via Zoom is set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 29 Register at lwvid.org.
