PREP SOFTBALL: Schultze, Jankay shine as Lake City sweeps Lewiston

| April 18, 2021 1:25 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Phoebe Schultze struck out 15 in the first game, and the Lake City Timberwolves went on to sweep the Inland Empire League-leading Lewiston Bengals 3-1 and 6-5 on Saturday.

Austin Hill led off the bottom of the first inning of the opener with a triple, and eventually scored for Lake City (8-4, 8-4 IEL). Abby Jankay hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

In the second game, Jankay hit two homers and drove in three runs for Lake City.

“What a great day for Lake City softball,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “We were locked in to two great softball games, and we could not have asked for a better day. It started from the first at bat when Austin hit the triple. I believe that really set the tone. I could not be more proud of the growth our team showed from the first time we played Lewiston (3-0 and 10-0 losses at Airport Park). It was night and day. Phoebe absolutely pounded the zone in both games, and our offense was able to do enough to win the games. Our seniors truly led today, and I am proud of them.”

Taryn Barney went 3 for 4 with a two-run homer and four RBIs for Lewiston (12-3, 7-2).

Lake City travels to Moscow on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM — Skylar Burke went 4 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored as the visiting Vikings beat the Hawks in Inland Empire League play.

“She’s a phenomenal base runner and has some great awareness on the bases,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said. “I’ve been telling them that we’re a hitting team and we make contact with the ball a lot, but how we’re going to win is with our defense. Today, we brought it together and believe we’ll continue to make progress with practice and time.”

Darretta credited a catch in the outfield Bekah West as a turning point in the game.

“I’ve been telling the girls to know when they need to leave their feet and when it was important to make a catch,” Darretta said. “Bekah came in and just dove for a ball that almost touched the ground, flipped over and caught the ball. It was a pretty amazing play to watch.”
